What Does CICO Mean?
CICO stands for Calories In, Calories Out. It posits that weight loss is governed by the difference between total chemical energy ingested and total kinetic and thermal energy expended over time.
While the concept is biochemically indisputable, the physiological variables affecting both sides of the equation are dynamic, not static:
- Calories In: Not merely what you swallow, but what is biologically absorbed across the intestinal lumen (governed by food matrix and fiber).
- Calories Out: Fluctuates based on body mass changes, hormone levels (leptin, thyroid T3), and spontaneous movement (NEAT).
Does Food Quality Still Matter on CICO?
Yes. While you could theoretically lose weight eating solely 1,500 calories of processed sweets, doing so leads to severe micronutrient deficiencies, hunger surges due to high glycemic index, and significant loss of lean muscle mass.
High food quality optimizes the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) and satiety signaling (GLP-1, PYY, CCK), making caloric adherence dramatically easier.
